Since 2004, the Sphinx Virtuosi’s concerts have been presented by the leading arts organizations, including annual return visits to Carnegie Hall as an established highlight of the fall season.
Their debut album, Songs for Our Times, was released on Deutsche Grammophon in July 2023 and represents the rich history of the Sphinx Organization and the vibrant future of classical music by centering the artistry of extraordinary composers and artistic visionaries of color.

Heralded for its kaleidoscopically varied repertoire and bold thematic programming, Sphinx Virtuosi concerts give prominence to historically excluded Black and Latinx composers such as Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Alberto Ginastera, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, Florence Price, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and George Walker. In an effort to expand its repertoire and engage new audiences, the ensemble commissions new works annually. Commissions have included major new works from Michael Abels, Terence Blanchard, Valerie Coleman, Xavier Foley, Ricardo Herz, Jimmy Lopez, Jessie Montgomery, Daniel Bernard Roumain, and Carlos Simon.
Members of the Sphinx Virtuosi have performed as soloists with major American orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland, Detroit, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras. Members also hold professional orchestral and academic positions. The Sphinx Virtuosi’s community engagement initiatives regularly extend beyond masterclasses and workshops to members leading DEI initiatives within arts organizations and connecting with other Sphinx programming to further the mission of achieving excellence through diversity. As a bilingual ensemble, these artist-citizens frequently break down existing barriers empowering the artform to connect with the broader community. During the pandemic in 2020/21 the ensemble found creative ways to connect with audiences and communities virtually through performances, panel discussions, masterclasses, Q&A sessions, and more reaching over 30,000 people across 20 organizations.
Sphinx Virtuosi - Isabella Stewart Garner Museum
The wonderful Sphinx Virtuosi, a string orchestra drawn from the nation’s finest Black and Latinx orchestral performers, returns to the Gardner Museum, their Boston home. We are especially excited to hear works by Derrick Skye and Juantio Becenti, both of whom the Gardner has previously commissioned. Sphinx is also bringing music of the remarkable 19th-century composer Teresa Carreño, who was also a globe-trotting pianist. Her music is only now coming to wider audiences. The program also includes a premiere by the wonderful New York-based violinist and composer Curtis Stewart.

Sphinx Virtuosi - Philadelphia Chamber Music Society
American Form/s is a musical tapestry depicting the many sounds of American classical music. Vibrant, varied, storied, and new, the self-conducted string orchestra Sphinx Virtuosi takes audiences on a journey through classically-framed infusions of soul, bluegrass, jazz, blues, and elements of rag. Works range from reimaginings of Joplin’s joyous landscapes to the complex rhythms of Curtis Stewart and brilliant influences of immigrant composers like Teresa Carreño. Experience the intricate harmonies and world influences of Derrick Skye’s writing, as well as modern interpretations of soul-stirring spirituals and more in this program carefully and collaboratively curated to celebrate the richness of the American musical landscape.
As an emerging soloist to watch, percussionist Britton-René Collins embodies the artistry and passion of contemporary percussion performance. A winner of the 2020 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, Britton-René has dedicated her art to shaping a more diverse and inclusive community for all musicians. A Grand Prize-winner of the 2022 Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition and the 2021 Chicago International Music Competition, Britton-René has performed as a soloist in the United States, Canada, and Europe. She has made several concerto appearances, including with the Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Valdosta Symphony, and the Meridian Symphony.
Sphinx Virtuosi - Carnegie Hall
The Sphinx Organization’s “flagship performing entity” presents a varied and vibrant program of string music in this acclaimed annual event. It opens with a riveting movement by 19th-century pianist, composer, singer, and conductor Teresa Carreño, a larger-than-life New Yorker from Venezuela who, by age 10, had performed for Abraham Lincoln at the White House during her first year of touring the US. Additional concepts of American music are explored in Derrick Skye’s multifaceted and optimistic American Mirror, Part One; works (including a New York premiere) by renowned violinist-composer Curtis Stewart, who “translates stories of American self-determination to the concert stage”; the Overture from Treemonisha, written by foundational ragtime composer Scott Joplin and newly arranged by Jannina Norpoth and Jessie Montgomery; and an imaginative nod to Joplin by celebrated film composer and advocate Levi Taylor

Vancouver International Film Festival: VIFF AMP Composer Filmmaker Accelerator
This year, 12 talented composers will collaborate with four established filmmakers through virtual sessions and an in-person recording and mixing sessions at Vancouver’s renowned The Warehouse Studios. Their compositions will be performed by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Over six weeks, participants will develop symphonic scores through collaboration with the filmmakers and mentorship from industry experts, focusing on both traditional and innovative scoring techniques. The CFA remains a pivotal program for advancing careers for emerging talent, driving forward the future of music in film.
